The Joint Mathematics Seminar between Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) was held on 17th February 2017. This seminar is an inaugural collaboration between postgraduate students from the School of Mathematical Sciences, USM and School of Informatics and Applied Mathematics, UMT. The meeting kicked off with welcome remarks from the Dean of School of Mathematical Sciences, Prof. Dr. Hailiza Kamarulhaili. In her opening speech, Prof. Hailiza presented the 5 pillars of HEBAT graduate-branding program, which refer to Holistic, Entrepreneurial, Balanced, Articulate and Thinker. She also shared about the courses offered by the School of Mathematical Sciences, USM. Then, the UMT representative, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Roslan Hasni also shared with seminar participants the brief history of the School of Informatics and Applied Mathematics, UMT and some recent developments in mathematical research.

The seminar then proceeded with a fascinating keynote lecture given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Teh Su Yean. The lecture was entitled “Making Connections through Mathematical Modeling”. This was followed by interesting presentations by 12 postgraduate students from USM and UMT. This year we had an exciting range of presenters ranging from talks on mathematical research to discussion on economic growth. Overall, seminar participants enjoyed a productive day filled with great talks, delicious food and various opportunities to communicate and network. This seminar also provided a platform for the postgraduate students from both universities to present their research, and enabled them to experience the process of communicating and receiving comments in a better professional environment. The organizing committee would like to thank all the speakers for their presentations and all attendees for their active participation and fruitful discussions.
