Curriculum Vitae

PROF. DATO' ROSIHAN M. ALI, FASc, FPSM, FMSA

Dr. Rosihan M. Ali is Professor of Mathematics at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He received his B. Sc. from University of Nevada, Reno in 1979. He completed his M. Sc in 1981 and his Ph. D in 1985 at Texas Tech University under the supervision of Prof. R. W. Barnard.

Prof. Ali specializes in the area of Geometric Function Theory. He has numerous publications to his credit in the form of books, and articles in journals and proceedings. He continues to be an active researcher in his field. His many journal articles have been reviewed and indexed in the citation databases of the Mathematical Reviews (American Mathematical Society) and Zentralblatt MATH (European Mathematical Society). Several of his articles have also been cited in research monographs, notably amongst which include the book entitled "Differential Subordinations: Theory and Applications" by S.S. Miller and P.T. Mocanu, Marcel Dekker, New York (2000).

Amongst his recent keynote and invited talks are at the International Symposium on Geometric Function Theory and Applications, Cluj-Napoca, Romania (September 2011), the First International Congress on Natural Sciences, Busan, Korea (August 2011), the International Conference on Mathematical Sciences, Bolu, Turkey (November 2010), the First International Conference on Mathematics and Statistics, co-organized by the American University of Sharjah, U.A.E. and the American Mathematical Society (March 2010), the 9th International Conference on Pure Mathematics, Islamabad, Pakistan (August 2008), and the 7th Annual Red Raider Symposium on Circle Packing, Conformal Mapping, and Applications & the Workshop on Complex Analysis and Special Functions, in Lubbock, Texas (October 2007).

Prof. Ali strives to promote mathematics at all levels. He is the Editor-In-Chief of the BULLETIN, the international journal of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society published jointly with USM. His editorial efforts since 1998 have received international recognition through the selection of the BULLETIN to be indexed in the prestigious Science Citation Index Expanded of the ISI Web of Science in 2007, and from Scopus in 2008.

Prof. Ali also sits on the Editorial Board of several other international journals, and has been appointed to serve on a variety of international committees. Prof. Ali was the President of the South East Asian Mathematical Society (SEAMS) for the 2008 - 2009 term. He played an instrumental role in the success of the 5th Asian Mathematical Conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in June 2009.

Apart from conducting research activities in the field of Geometric Function Theory, Prof. Ali has further interest to issues related to the field of Mathematics Education, specifically those pertaining to the effective utilization of graphing calculator technology as an ICT tool. His many professional contributions in this area include positions as an Associate Organizer of ICME-9, Japan, 2000; Topic Study Group ICME-10, Denmark, 2004; and International Program Committee of various conferences, including the East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education (EARCOME), and more notably, the conference series National Conference on Graphing Calculators (NCGC).

Prof. Ali has served as USM's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) from 2005 - 2007, as well as the Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences from 1995 - 2001. He is one of two Senate elected representatives to the University Board of Governors for 2011 - 2014. Prof. Ali is also a member of the National Science and Research Council, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia (2011 - 2013). In 2008, Prof. Ali was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (FASc), as well as a Fellow of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society (FPSM), and in 2010, as a Fellow of the Malaysian Scientific Association (FMSA). Prof. Ali is a recipient of several awards. He was a recipient of the University's 2008 Distinguished Individual Award, and the recipient of the 2008 Best Research Paper Award in the Category of Science, Technology and Medicine. The latter prize was awarded by the Malaysian Council on Scholarly Publications (MAPIM). He has since won MAPIM Best Research Paper Award in the Category of Science, Technology and Medicine for three consecutive years from 2008 - 2010. One of his research papers also won Best Research Paper Award from the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society in 2010. With the consent of His Royal Highness the Sultan of Pahang, Prof. Ali was awarded the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (which carries the title Dato') in May 2006 in conjunction with His Majesty's 75th birthday celebrations.
