Dr. Rosihan M. Ali is Professor of Mathematics at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He received his B. Sc. from University of Nevada in 1979, and his M. Sc and Ph. D from Texas Tech University in 1981 and 1985 respectively.
Prof. Ali specializes in the area of complex function theory. He has numerous publications to his credit in the form of books and journal articles, which in the main are reviewed and indexed in the American Mathematical Society citation database of Mathematical Reviews/MathSciNet. His scholarly works have garnered several accolades, notably the Best Research Paper Award in the Category of Science, Technology and Medicine from the Malaysian Council on Scholarly Publications (MAPIM) for three consecutive years from 2008 - 2010, and Best Research Paper Award from the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society.
His recent keynote and invited talks include the International Conference on Mathematical Analysis & Applications, IIT-Roorkee, India (November 2016), the AMS Special Session on Complex Analysis and Special Functions, JMM, Atlanta, Georgia (January 2017), the Asian Mathematical Conference, Bali, Indonesia, (July 2016), International Symposium on Geometric Function Theory, Ohrid, Macedonia (August 2015), the Asian Mathematical Conference, Busan, Korea (July 2013), and the International Symposium on Geometric Function Theory, Cluj-Napoca, Romania (September 2011).
Prof. Ali strives to promote mathematics at all levels. He is the Editor-In-Chief of the Bulletin of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society published jointly with USM and Springer. His editorial efforts since 1998 have led to the Bulletin being indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SciSearch) of Web of Science and Scopus, as well as a Reference List Journal in the AMS MathSciNet database. The Bulletin is a recipient of the national CREAM Award from the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia for three consecutive years since the inception of the award in 2015.
Prof. Ali also sits on the Editorial Board of several other international journals, and has been appointed to serve on a variety of international committees. He is Malaysia's representative in the Council of the South East Asian Mathematical Society (SEAMS), and was its President for the 2008 - 2009 term.
In addition to complex function theory, his research interests also include the mathematical education of in-service and pre-service teachers. His professional contributions in this area include positions as an Associate Organizer of ICME - 9, Japan, 2000; Topic Study Group ICME - 10, Denmark, 2004; and more notably, the national conference series on graphing calculators (NCGC).
Prof. Ali has served as USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) from 2005 - 2007, and Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences from 1995 - 2001. He was a member of the University Board of Governors from 2011 - 2014. Prof. Ali also served as a member of the National Science and Research Council, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia from 2011 - 2015.
In 2008, Prof. Ali was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, as well as a Fellow of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society, and in 2010, as a Fellow of the Malaysian Scientific Association. He was a recipient of the USM 2008 and 2013 Distinguished Personality Award. With the consent of His Royal Highness DYMM Sultan of Pahang, Prof. Ali was conferred State Honours the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (which carries the title Dato') in May 2006, and the Sri Indera Mahkota Pahang (SIMP) (which carries the title Dato' Indera) on September 26, 2017.
