The use of hand-held technology provides many exciting opportunities. Since 1997 there have been efforts by the School of Mathematical Sciences to promote the use of graphic calculator (CAS and non-CAS) amongst students and educators in Malaysian universities and secondary schools through conferences and workshops.

The Graphic Calculator Interest Group seeks to promote the integration of graphing calculators in teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels, to build alliances and develop joint initiatives with existing and emerging groups interested in graphing calculators, and to promote the professional development of educators with regard to the use of graphing calculators.

The School of Mathematical Sciences introduced a special laboratory course in graphic calculator for pre-service teachers and students in mathematics since the 2001/2002 academic year. The course objectives are to develop familiarity with the CAS graphic calculators, to understand the relevance of calculator technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics, as well as to initiate technology enhanced exploration and investigation activities designed to provide students conceptual understanding in mathematics and statistics.

Research is conducted in collaboration with the School of Educational Studies and graduate students to study various issues in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment impacted by the incorporation of graphic calculators. Members of the group have published results of their research in journals and conference proceedings. The group is also well linked to several leading international researchers.
